If you're thinking about moving to the Seattle area, one of the biggest decisions you'll make is choosing which Eastside city is the best fit for your lifestyle.

I've lived in the Seattle area my entire life, help people relocate here every week, and have spent years exploring these communities both personally and professionally.

In this guide, I'm ranking ten of the biggest Eastside cities—not based on home prices alone, but on what it's actually like to live there day-to-day.

My rankings consider:

• Parks and outdoor recreation
• Commute convenience
• Restaurants and amenities
• Overall lifestyle
• Value for the money
• Community feel

This isn't meant to be a definitive ranking. It's simply my opinion based on years of living and working throughout the Eastside.

How I Ranked Each Eastside City

Before jumping into the rankings, it's important to understand what I looked at.

Rather than focusing on just one factor like schools or housing prices, I considered the complete lifestyle each city offers.

That includes:

#10 Mercer Island

Mercer Island is unquestionably one of the most desirable addresses in the Seattle area.

Its location between Seattle and Bellevue is hard to beat, the schools are excellent, and many homes enjoy incredible Lake Washington views.

The biggest drawback is value.

For most buyers, you're paying a significant premium for location and prestige. While Mercer Island offers an exceptional quality of life, I don't personally believe the lifestyle is dramatically better than several less expensive Eastside communities.

For that reason, Mercer Island lands at number ten.

#9 Bellevue

This one will probably surprise some people.

Bellevue is one of Washington's economic powerhouses.

It offers:

• Major employers
• Excellent shopping
• Great restaurants
• Waterfront parks
• Easy freeway access

If your career is your highest priority, Bellevue could easily be your number one city.

From my perspective as both a Realtor and a dad, however, Bellevue feels more urban than many other Eastside communities.

The increased traffic, density, and faster pace of life push it lower on my personal rankings.

#8 Newcastle

Newcastle is often overlooked, but it's a very nice place to live.

It offers quiet residential neighborhoods, beautiful homes, and a safe suburban atmosphere.

The challenge is that Newcastle lacks a defined downtown or central gathering place.

For buyers who simply want peace and quiet, that's a positive.

For others looking for restaurants, shopping, and community events within walking distance, it may feel a little limited.

#7 Redmond

Redmond has changed tremendously over the past decade.

As Microsoft's hometown, it has become one of the region's strongest employment centers while continuing to offer excellent parks like Marymoor Park.

Pros include:

• Strong job market
• Great parks
• Convenient location
• Light rail expansion
• Excellent trail system

The biggest change I've noticed is that Redmond has become noticeably more urban and tech-focused.

While many buyers love that energy, I personally prefer communities with a slightly quieter neighborhood atmosphere.

#6 Bothell

Bothell might be the Eastside's biggest sleeper city.

Its downtown has transformed dramatically with:

• New restaurants
• Improved walkability
• Revitalized public spaces
• Strong family neighborhoods

Bothell also tends to be more attainable than many Eastside cities while still offering convenient access to Bellevue, Kirkland, and Seattle.

The reason it doesn't rank higher is simply because the cities ahead of it offer more dramatic scenery or a stronger overall lifestyle appeal.

#5 Snoqualmie

Snoqualmie offers one of the most unique lifestyles anywhere on the Eastside.

With Mount Si serving as the backdrop, outdoor recreation becomes part of everyday life.

Some highlights include:

• Jeanne Hansen Community Park
• Extensive trail system
• Family-oriented neighborhoods
• Grocery stores and restaurants close to home
• Incredible mountain scenery

The biggest tradeoff is commuting.

Living farther east means longer drives into Bellevue or Seattle, and weather can be more variable during the winter months.

For many families, though, those tradeoffs are well worth it.

#4 Kirkland

Kirkland will always have a special place for me because I grew up there.

It remains one of the most complete cities on the Eastside.

Some of my favorite features include:

• Marina Park
• Juanita Beach
• Downtown waterfront
• Excellent restaurants
• Community events throughout the year

Ten years ago, Kirkland probably would have ranked number one on my list.

Today, with two young boys, I find myself valuing a little more space and easier access to nature than Kirkland typically provides.

That slight shift in priorities is what keeps it from the top three.

#3 Woodinville

Woodinville feels like the Pacific Northwest that many people imagine before moving here.

You'll find:

• Mature evergreen forests
• Larger residential lots
• Wine country
• Quiet neighborhoods
• Rural character with modern conveniences

One thing I appreciate most is that Woodinville hasn't lost its personality.

It doesn't feel overdeveloped or overly planned.

Instead, it maintains a natural character that's becoming increasingly difficult to find this close to Bellevue.

#2 Sammamish

If raising a family is your highest priority, Sammamish checks almost every box.

It offers:

• Beautiful neighborhoods
• Excellent parks
• Strong sense of community
• Quiet residential streets
• Convenient access to Bellevue

One of the biggest compliments I hear from clients is how peaceful Sammamish feels despite being only a short drive from major employment centers.

The only reason Sammamish doesn't take my top spot is the lack of a traditional downtown.

For restaurants, entertainment, and nightlife, you'll often find yourself driving into neighboring cities.

#1 Issaquah

For me, Issaquah represents the best overall balance on the Eastside.

It combines:

• Mountain access
• Downtown shopping
• Great restaurants
• Parks and trails
• Easy commuting
• Strong community feel

What separates Issaquah is that it never feels like it sacrifices one part of life for another.

It's not overly urban.

It's not overly rural.

It simply offers one of the most balanced lifestyles available anywhere in the Seattle area.

If someone relocating here asked me where they should begin their home search, Issaquah would usually be my first recommendation.
